What's New?

Dear Friends and Family of Bedford-Sackville Physiotherapy,

I am so excited to announce that we have won a CONSUMER'S CHOICE AWARD for Business Excellence in the category of Physical Therapy for a second year!   I am thankful for the wonderful team I have working with me as well as all of the clients, neighbours and friends who put their trust and their health in our hands.  Thank you!

This April Jodie Bowden (massage therapist) went off on a year maternity leave after welcoming her daughter into the world.  We welcome Iman Willoughby who will be filling in for Jodi until April when Jodi returns.

Lori Breakspear (massage therapist) had a baby girl, Sophia, on September 25th weighing in at 6 lbs 11 oz!  She plans to return for only a few hours a week, Monday nights the beginning of February.

We fortunately have welcomed

Jennifer MacKinnon PT and Kathleen O'Reilly (PT) to our team.  Both have capably jumped in to assist our clients.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is an ancient Chinese method of causing local congestion. A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin by suction. This draws up the underlying tissues. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and localized healing takes place.

Cupping has also been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, and activate the skin. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available.

The cups used are improved plastic cups and they are applied using a suction pump. This is a modification of the old Chinese method of using heat. They are easier to be handled and safer to be used.

Will I get bruised?  The most common misunderstanding regarding one of the most beneficial after effects of cupping, is the marks that sometimes result.

Where there is dead, static blood, lymph, cellular debis, pathogenic factors, and toxins present in the body, Cupping can leave marks which indicate that the stagnation has moved from the deeper tissue layers to the surface, allowing fresh oxygenated blood to nourish and heal the underlying areas.

In many countries - this is a non-issue, but in some industrialized countries, where Allopathic Medicine has over shadowed more holistic approaches, these surface discolorations are misinterpreted as tissue damage. Westerners also live in an image conscience society that also has a heightened sensitivity to domestic abuse and thus, without sufficient understanding, some people are unnerved upon seeing this after effect.

Once people understand what these marks are, and feel the results - the concerns disappear.

The color of the marks depends on the level of stagnation in the area. They can range from a bright red to dark purple that last ~ 3 days to a week - sometimes longer if the person is very sick or sedentary. If there is no stagnation present, there will be only a light pink mark which disappears within hours.

Chronic injuries and trauma may require multiple cupping sessions to remove all stagnation. You will find in follow up treatments the marks get visibly lighter and lighter as the pathogens are removed from the body.  Both Kielly Christie and Iman Willoughby (RMT's) are now offering this service, under massage therapy.

MY PHYSIO CLINIC - a poem by DAVE ORMAN

One day at work I had a fall

Knew right away who I had to call

Bedford-Sackville Physio to take care of me

With the very best treatment for my injury

First the assessment, then action plan

By professional staff who all lend a hand

The first time you walk through their door

You know you chose the best clinic for sure

There's Sandra and Alicia, Paula and Michelle

Jackie the assistant and Heather as well

The occupational therapist, who perhaps you'll meet

If you're injured on the job, with the exercise sheet

A personal program to get you fit and back

To work feeling better and your life on track

It's physiotherapy and they are the best

From my times there I can truly attest

Exercise has been shown to be very useful in the treatment of osteoarthritis [9,10.] It is wise to consult a physiotherapist before beginning any exercise program or to obtain an osteoarthritic specific and individualized program for you.  As reduced muscle strength and poorly aligned joints can lead to the progression of osteoarthritis an appropriate exercise regimen is essential.  Studies show that a properly planned land-based exercise program can reduce pain and increase function in those with osteoarthritis of the knee [9,10].

Bedford-Sackville Physiotherapy Clinic, we can can also advise you on the use of other simple modalities such as ice, heat or relaxation techniques which some patients with osteoarthritis find very useful in decreasing pain and improving mobility.
